1A healthy mouth is the gateway to a healthy body. New studies link gum disease to significant health concerns like stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and even low birth weight babies. We want you to achieve your optimum health state, as well as look good, and feel good.
Studies now show that bacteria can travel through the blood stream because of chronic gum infection. A byproduct of immune system’s reaction to bacterial invasion is inflammation, both in the gum tissue and in the blood stream in general. Patients with uncontrolled gum disease are twice as likely to develop diabetes. There is even a higher mortality rate in diabetic patients who have periodontal disease. Research in The Journal of periodontology has shown that non surgical treatment of periodontal disease actually improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetics. The interconnected nature of periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes is now grounded in a very large body of research, and there is new information coming out almost on a monthly basis. We strive to stay abreast of this important information by regularly attending continuing education, and working with trusted dental and medical specialists.
Our dental practice is striving to help our patients reach a better quality of life through healthy teeth and gums as well as looking for oral conditions that maybe a sign of an underlying medical conditions. For many of our dental patients we see them more often that their physicians do. We routinely do oral cancer exams, take blood pressure on adult patients, and look for chronic gum infections.
